Granite pilgrimage
Granite is omnipresent in the Mühlviertel and here especially in the Bohemian Forest, the northernmost region of Upper Austria. Immovably shaping the landscape, it stands for the power that grows out of tranquility.
Granite and water as the basic elements of the Mühlviertel are therefore the focus of the Granite Pilgrimage Trail. Between the Danube and the Bohemian Forest, the 90-kilometer circular hiking trail unfolds through a total of ten towns.
Granite is one aspect of this hike that deliberately invites you to switch off, get out of the car and contemplate your inner self. In combination with the waters of the Große Mühl and the Steinerne Mühl, it stands for the peace and serenity that the highlands north of the Danube radiate. Qualities that are a prerequisite for the motto of the granite pilgrimage: Pause, recognize, reflect and come back as an Other. Consciously, in this sense, a total of 15 power places are included in the hiking route: old castles and palaces, contemplative churches and forest chapels, natural monuments.
The granite pilgrimage hiking trail can be easily mastered in three to four day stages. The granite pilgrimage map lists, in addition to the power places along the way, 24 granite pilgrimage businesses that invite you to stay overnight and stop for a bite to eat along the route.
